Royalty

Is there any headgear that can be further removed from royalty than the beret? The woolen hat that kept the sun off poor farmers' heads while slaving away on their little plots of terraced land in the Pyrenees mountains, that kept shepherds dry from the rain and sleet, protected them from the cold and snow while herding their sheep on the mountain pastures and kept the peasants and their children warm.

Things change, obviously. Of course, princes have worn berets during their military stints and for photo sessions in military gala uniforms, but these days it's queens and princesses too, that discover the beret, as these British,
Danish and Dutch princesses show.

Maybe the beginning of a more egalitarian society?
